bizzybeeyellow.jpgSummer solstice Season of the greenest leaf
We are moving toward the first "stand still" of the sun this year, usually celebrated on the 21 of June when the sun is at it's highest point. The Summer Solstice Festival or Midsummer. Alban Heruin was the Celtic name for this festival. The Romans and later on the Saxons called it Litha. This is the season of the greenest leaf, with the longest days of the year, having it's peak on or around the 21th of June.
The nights are short and the sun is abundant, she claims the days and makes them bright and sunny. The trees are at their best, and some, like the Elder, blackberry and wild rose bloom for the second time. Every branch sings its song of life and the adult leaves compete to catch the strong light of the sun in his optimum position above them.  The leaves wisper to eachother in the gentle breeze, sharing the abundant energies of this season.

Optimum force and supporting energies
This season is like the noon and reminds of the full moon. A time for heightened clarity and energy, a peak of power, clarity and creativity. Now is the time to use this moment of optimum force, presented to us by the sun, to give life and energy to that what we want. Our earth-revering ancestors experienced the land as a pregnant woman, shortly before giving birth. Mother nature was on the brink of giving birth to everything they worked so hard for. She is heavy and full with the heat of summer and she is taken care of by the people who are preparing for the birth of the harvest.

We can experience this time as a time of creativity, abundant energies and satisfying activities, while at the same time experiencing the soft, round, full and saturated feeling of midsummer. We live life and work at the fullest, our projects are at their highest peak of effectiveness, but we also love the lazy times of relaxation. This is how we make the most of this passionate time of the year!

So here is a paradox for us: midsummer is hotblooded as well as relaxing for us in terms of energy. Whatever we do and however we bring this to the outside world, it can be done with a balanced mix of thirst for life and a feeling of grateful satisfaction. The ideas we had in Februari take their flight and use the full creative force, but we can also relax and enjoy what we have accomplished till now.

Celebrating, feasting, bonfire and saying thanks to the lifegiving powers of the sun are a part of Midsummer celebrations of old. The days around the Litha festival are full of joy and remember us of the abundance of nature. Warmth, friendship, passion and love are tangibly present during these long summer days. It is also a time to forget past worries, to heal relationships and forgive old differences of opinion.

Inner work
The tasks, projects and changes in your life that you have, since the Wintersolstice celebrations of Yule, around the 21st of December cherished, sown, fed and taken care of are now maturing, together with the time that the sun reachis his highest point. The long days and the warm weather give us the energy to go on. Soon, growth will stop. As with the sun that grows, pauses and changes course, so should we stop at Litha and look back. It may be that some of our tasks or goals have been fulfilled or realized. Other tasks, ideas or goals will need a last gentle push before they can reach their full potential. Other things in your life may already blossom or even carry the beginning of fruits. One thing is for sure; your progress uptil now brings changes, either in perspective, in circumstances or in both. This is why we experience and accept, in this time the continuous turning of the wheel of the year, that nothing remains the same. We travel through the year and we travel through our lives, continuously growing and changing.

Goddess and God, Marriage of Heaven and Earth
The Goddess (earth, water) is now the beloved of the sun and as the earth mother, she is pregnant of the harvest. She is mature and sensual. The God (sun, fire) is strong, virile and at the height of his power. The love between God and Goddess, heaven and earth is passionate and eternal. They unify in the warmth and light of each other. In present-day Litha ceremonies, the God is often represented by sun and fire, while the Goddes is being symbolized by a cauldron with water and flowers. Water gives life to everything and the fire of the sun lets the flowers bloom. They can not do without each other.
Avebury steencirkel
Stone circles
Stone circles like in Avebury often represent this priciple of the Sacred Marriage in the form of the stones or the layout of this place. This way, during midsummerday sunrise at Stonehenge, the long shadow of the "Heel Stone" is cast upon the altar which has a vulva-like shape. A clear representation of the unison of heaven and earth, of the male and female energies. Avebury has a clear connection with the marriage of male and female energies inside the circle. The long avenue of megaliths used by women to enter the circle is in it self a depiction of penetrating the circle. A little further is Silbury Hill, which makes me think of a pregnant women's belly. The ancient people who knew the secrets of the earth knew of the energy lines that are woven all over the earth. The Chinese people call these lines the "Dragon Paths". Sanctuaries were contstructed on these energy lines to help and maintain, to improve or transform the energy for the good of all. Much of this knowledge has been lost for the intellectual mind, but if you listen with your natural "intelligence", this mystery can still be felt in the heart. When you walk between these remains, sit, feel and relax, you can still sense the essence of long gone rituals and intentions in these sacred places.

Elves and Fairies
The ancient people worked with nature and with the fairies, who take care of nature. During midsummer night, the evening/night on which the fairy folks sing and dances to celebrate their creations of beauty they created in nature this year, you can go outside to speak your wish to start working in harmony with nature and the earth. Know then that the fairies will test your sense of humour and intention and that, if you pass these tests, they will share their knowledge of nature and inspire your heart.

Midzomer krans Tips for your personal Midsummer or Litha
Celebrate Midsummer outside with your friends and family (you can perform a spiral dance, court eachother, light bonfires or use (home made) candle lights, look at the summit of the sun, make music, dance and make merry). Bathing in healing waters (if you have some water from a healing well ie. the Chalice Well or Lourdes, put a few drops in your bathtub. The water in your tub will adapt the healing properties of the water from the healing well, water carries information). You can do a ceremonie with your coven or magical friends, in which you depict the sacred marriage of Heaven and Earth or you can play the fight between the Oak king and the Holly King. Give thanks to nature now at the peak of its strength. Watch the sunrise, for the last time to his highest point this year. This is traditionally also a good time for marriage and for enforcing relational ties. Magically, the energy of this period is good for Love magic and Herbal magic. Since ancient times, this is the perfect time for divination (=consult the divine, make visible that which is still unseen).
